Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Mirzya' has proved to be a big box office tragedy of 2016, say trade pundits. Starring newcomers Harshvardhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher, it collected only R6.5 crore in its first weekend.

The film competed with 'Tutak Tutak Tutiya' and 'MSG: The Warrior Lion Heart', both of which had little anticipation among cinebuffs. Makers of 'Mirzya' stand to lose the most given that it is made on an estimated Rs 35 crore.

Trade expert Amod Mehra says, "Considering the dull response to the trailer and music, the opening day footfalls wasn't a surprise for the trade. Negative reviews and poor word of mouth publicity contributed to the film's debacle."

Says trade pundit Vishek Chauhan, "'Mirzya' has collected little over Rs 2 crore on a daily average. For a film releasing on 1700 screens, that's less than 10 per cent occupancy a day. I suspect it will, at best, do a lifetime business of Rs 15 crore, which it seems won't be enough to cover even its digital cost," he adds.

Meanwhile, holdover hit 'MS Dhoni: The Untold Story' did double of Mirzya's business over the weekend. It crossed Rs 100 crore (taking into account its Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions)
