If the actor agrees to work in the film, it would be his second movie on the subject. He had earlier starred in Deepa Mehta's Earth-1947, which was an adaptation of Bapsi Sidhawa's novel Ice Candyman.
The film will be directed by India-born filmmaker Pan Nalin, who has earlier directed highly acclaimed film Samsara.
Nalin hopes to rope in Winslet for the project but if she rejects it, he will approach Rachel Weisz to play the role of Dr Sophie in the film, the website said.
"Either Kate or Rachel will be doing my film. I will be meeting both of them after my Cannes trip to finalise the casting. Either of them will be able to do justice to this marvelous story," Nalin said.
