Elections 2014 threw up a mixed bag for tinsel town candidates. Some won and by huge margins while others had to taste bitter defeat. We bring you both the winners and the losers


Narendra Modi may have swept the elections this year but as far as Bollywood is concerned, it has been a mixed bag. Some names won and by huge margins while others had to taste bitter defeat. hitlist brings you the break up of who fared how at the polls this time around…

Kirron Kher
Constituency: Chandigarh
Party: BJP
Result: Won

The lowdown: The actress, who is married to Anupam Kher, recounts that she had been asked to contest elections at the last minute. "People have given me a clear mandate and also to our leader, Narendra Modi. With this win comes the responsibility of undoing the wrongs that have been done in the past and I am happy that BJP has won the elections," says Kirron, who defeated Congress leader Pawan Bansal and Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Gul Panag.

Moon Moon Sen
Constituency: Bankura, West Bengal
Party: Trinamool Congress
Result: Won

The lowdown: The actress defeated her competitors, Dr. Subash Sarkar from the AAP and Nil Madhav Gupta from the BJP.

Shatrughna Sinha
Constituency: Patna Sahib
Party: BJP
Result: Won

The lowdown: "The last time I won by a margin of 1.25lakh votes but this time, I have won by a bigger margin; I had a lead of more than 2.5lakh votes. It would not have been possible without the support of the people of Patna and a lot of credit goes to my wife who was there with me throughout. My victory has effectively silenced my critics and this is a fitting reply to UPA government's Coalgate, CWG, 2G and other scams," says Sinha.

Paresh Rawal
Constituency: East Ahemedabad, Gujarat
Party: BJP
Result: Won

The lowdown: Rawal defeated Himmat Singh Patel from the Congress by a huge margin.

Bapul Supriyo
Constituency: Asansol
Party: BJP
Result: Won

The lowdown: In spite of his constituency being a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress, he won the seat by defeating Trinamool Congress' Dola Sen, Bangsha Gopal Choudhury from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Indrani Mishra from the Congress.

Manoj Tiwari
Constituency: North East Delhi
Party: BJP
Result: Won

The lowdown: His party won all seven seats in Delhi. Tiwari defeated Congress' Jai Prakash Agarwal and AAP's Anand Kumar.

Vinod Khanna
Constituency: Gurdaspur
Party: BJP
Result: Won

The lowdown: Vinod Khanna has been contesting from the same constituency for many years now and he managed to win against Partap Singh Bajwa from Congress and Sukhwinder Singh from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Hema Malini
Constituency: Mathura
Party: BJP
Result: Won


The lowdown: The actress was over the moon even as news about her win trickled in. "I am excited about my new role and I will do my best for the betterment of my constituency. The first thing that comes to mind is cleaning the Ganges and providing clean drinking water to people. Also, power supply is a big issue here and I will focus on generation of solar energy and encouraging small scale industries," she says.

Smriti Irani
Constituency: Amethi
Party: BJP
Result: Lost

The lowdown: The Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi actress is said to have given Gandhi scion, Rahul Gandhi, a tough fight for the Amethi seat. At one point, he was said to be trailing her but he then bounced back to win the constituency, known to be a Congress bastion. "With just a 20 day campaign, we managed to get 95 per cent of the vote share. For the party to give me Amethi as a constituency was a huge compliment to my own ability and a challenge. The BJP sweeping the polls, including in Goa, where I was in charge, makes me very happy. I am thankful to the people of Amethi; this was the highest BJP vote there," she says.

Mahesh Manjrekar
Constituency: Mumbai North West
Party: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)
Result: Lost

The lowdown: Manjrekar pointed out that he is not disheartened by the loss. "We live to fight another day. You have to give it your best; you have to give the opponent a good fight and leave the rest to the people. Gajanan Kirtikar rode the Modi wave and that's how he won," says Manjrekar. Apart from Shiv Sena's Kirtikar, Manjrekar was up against Congress MP Gurudas Kamat, AAP's Mayank Gandhi and independent candidate, Rakhi Sawant.

Nagma
Constituency: Meerut
Party: Congress
Result: Lost


The lowdown: The actress compares elections to war. "One has to fight it irrespective of who wins or loses. Ultimately, it is about the ideology you stand for. There is definitely a need for retrospection. One cannot write off a party like the Congress. People apparently want change. Also, I was given the ticket just a few days after the Muzzaffarpur
riots. In fact, just after the BJP's Varanasi road show, there were riots in Meerut," she says. Nagma fought against BJP candidate Rajendra Agarwal, BSP's Mohd Shahid Akhlak, SP's Shahid Manzoor and AAP's Himanshu Singh.

Ravi Kishan
Constituency: Jaunpur
Party: Congress
Result: Lost

The lowdown: Ravi, who lost to BJP candidate KP Singh, said, "There was no local support for me from the sitting MLA of the constituency; I had to fight my own battle. I even broke my back and went on to address about 400 meetings while campaigning but nothing worked for me. I lost because I got no local support and people surrendered to the Modi wave."

Prakash Jha
Constituency: West Champaran,
Party: Janata Dal (U)
Result: Lost


The lowdown: "I campaigned hard. It is just unfortunate that I did not get a chance to serve the people of Champaran," said Jha, who lost to sitting BJP MP, Sanjay Jaiswal.

Bappi Lahiri
Constituency: Sreerampur
Party: BJP
Result: Lost


The lowdown: Bappida may have lost but he is elated that the BJP has been voted to power. "The party has created history with the results and it is soon going to form a government. I am very happy about it. As far as my constituency is concerned, I put up a tough fight," he says.

Rakhi Sawant
Constituency: Mumbai North West
Party: Independent
Result: Lost

The lowdown: "I may have lost, but this was just a dress rehearsal for me. I had the zeal and the enthusiasm to serve the people, but contesting elections needs a lot of money, which I didn't have. I am very happy with BJP's victory," says Rakhi.

Javed Jaffrey
Constituency: Lucknow
Party: AAP
Result: Lost

The lowdown: He was contesting against BJP's national party president Rajnath Singh, who won the seat. His other competitors included Dr Rita Bahuguna Joshi from the Congress, Nakul Dubey from BSP and Abhishek Mishra from the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Jaya Prada
Constituency: Bijnor
Party: Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD)
Result: Lost

The lowdown: The actress, who was representing RLD, only managed to get 24,348 votes. She was up against BJP's Maluk Nagar, AAP's Dr Gaurav Chauhan and Rajendra Singh Advocate from the BJP.

Raj Babbar
Constituency: Ghaziabad
Party: Congress
Result: Lost

The lowdown: The actor lost to BJP's Gen VK Singh. Another person who had to face defeat in the same constituency was Shazia Ilmi from the AAP.
