Sanjeev Sinha
The Sanjeev Sinha Foundation is thrilled to announce Buoyant Iconic Depth, an exhibition showcasing the profound works of the late artist Sanjeev Sinha. The exhibition will be held at the Visual Arts Gallery, India Habitat Centre, from November 20th to 26th, 2024.
This exhibition, curated by Els Reijnders (Director Foundation for Indian Artist) and Dianne Hagen (Visual artist from the Netherlands) and sponsored by Takshila, The Raza Foundation and Mediverse Hospital, offers an intimate look into Sinha's artistic journey from 2013 to 2020, a period marked by an emotionally rich body of work that seamlessly blends his bold and colorful paintings and intricate and symbolic sculptures.
In these works, Sinha explores complex themes such as society, beauty, and peace, reflecting his deep connection to Indian culture and his personal contemplations on the human condition. The multiple meanings and hidden depths within his work become apparent upon deeper reflection and, much like the title Buoyant Iconic Depth, these layers rise to the surface, always drifting above, inviting viewers to explore beyond the immediate.
A highlight of this exhibition is the first-time unveiling of many of Sinha's paintings from 2013 to 2020, which have remained unseen by the public until now. Some of his sculptures, previously exhibited in Amsterdam, will also be displayed, fulfilling Sinha's vision of presenting his paintings and sculptures side by side and showcase their inherent relationship.
Describing Sinha's unique approach to art, Willem Baars, art historian and gallerist, remarked, "He could create images you had never seen before but could relate to in some way, yet they might also make you feel uncomfortable or leave you floating somewhere. His images were something you could never instantly read. There's some kind of layering in his work that demands attention." This sense of mystery and emotional depth is also echoed by Meera Menezes, independent art critic and curator, who noted, "It was this need that translated into his desire to create a visual vocabulary that generated a feeling of transcendence and timelessness."
Referring to his early works from 1990 Meera Menezes, independent art critic and curator, noted, "It was this need that translated into his desire to create a visual vocabulary that generated a feeling of transcendence and timelessness."
In conjunction with the exhibition, the Sanjeev Sinha Foundation will also be launching a full-color catalog. This exclusive full-color catalog is a treasure trove for any art enthusiast, offering unparalleled insights into Sinha's work that will feature insightful texts by Meera
Menezes, Willem Baars, Els Reijnders and Dianne Hagen. The catalog will delve into Sinha's artistic journey and offer a comprehensive view of his body of work, serving as an invaluable resource for art lovers and scholars alike.
Born in 1963 in Barh, Bihar, Sanjeev Sinha was a pivotal figure in the emerging Bihari art generation of the 1980s. Graduating from the College of Arts & Crafts, Patna, Sinha's journey took him across India, from Lucknow to his permanent residence in Delhi. His work, deeply rooted in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies, explores themes of society, peace, and beauty always with a reflection on the intrinsic role of art in society. His artistic contributions have been recognized worldwide, including winning the National Academy Award in 1991 at the young age of 28.
Sinha's eclectic body of work is notable for its diversity in style and medium. From his early contemplative paintings depicting silence amidst a world in turmoil to his later vivid works such as the Gentle Bite series of 2013, Sinha deftly shifted between stylistic approaches and composition methods, often juxtaposing mythological figures with modern symbols. His sculptures, intimate yet monumental, play with scale and symbolism, inviting the viewer into a world of personal reflection and cultural depth.
Curated by Els Reijnders and Dianne Hagen, "Buoyant Iconic Depth" provides a rare opportunity to experience Sinha's dual mastery in painting and sculpture. His works are not mere visual statements; they are conversations about the spiritual, the societal, and the deeply personal. By displaying his sculptures alongside paintings, this exhibition showcases the holistic nature of Sinha's artistic expression, where both forms feed into each other in thought and execution.
