Waseem Javed Khan
In Mankhurd Shivajinagar, independent candidate Waseem Javed Khan is challenging heavyweight opponents with a campaign centered on pressing local issues such as drug abuse, healthcare disparities, and civic improvements. Q1. As one of the most educated candidates in the assembly elections, what motivated you to run as an independent candidate in the Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar constituency?
My motivation stems from a deep desire to improve the lives of the people. My father dedicated his life to building and beautifying Govandi and I aim to honour his legacy by continuing his good work. With my background as an engineer with a Master's degree from the US, I returned to contribute meaningfully to my community.
Q2. What are the key challenges faced by residents in your constituency and what will be your priority areas?
Education and limited job opportunities are significant challenges that lead to frustration among the youth. There is an urgent need to upgrade our existing schools and establish new ones to meet the growing demand for quality education. In particular, a college for girls is critically needed. Furthermore, we must focus on enhancing the overall quality of education by improving infrastructure and ensuring teachers receive adequate training. Additionally, we need to implement modern skill development programs to create employment opportunities that align with the demands of our rapidly ever-evolving digital landscape.
Dumping Ground
Q3. There are reports about deteriorating basic living conditions in Govandi, what is your perspective on the situation?
I completely agree; the community is facing significant challenges due to inadequate access to quality healthcare and insufficient sanitary facilities, which have led to various health issues particularly for marginalized communities. We must increase the number of well-equipped hospitals and clinics to effectively address common health concerns. Moreover, the toxic emissions from the biomedical waste dumping ground have led to serious health concerns for local residents. Addressing these issues is of utmost priority to improve the quality of life in Govandi.
Q4. Regarding the pollution from the dumping grounds, What is your position on this pressing issue?
The dumping problem is not merely an environmental concern; it is a matter of life and death for our community. Residents are going through serious health and environmental consequences, and it is imperative that we take decisive action against those responsible for this. If I am elected to represent this area, I commit to implementing concrete measures to close the dumping ground within a year and address the urgent needs of our community. Our priority must be to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all resident
Q5. Drug abuse is a significant concern in your constituency. What strategies do you plan to implement to tackle this issue?
The rising problem of drug addiction is truly alarming, especially with boys as young as 8 to 10 becoming involved. This not only endangers their lives but also contributes to crime and security issues in our community. My commitment is to take comprehensive action to address this crisis. I plan to collaborate with citizen groups and relevant authorities to implement effective prevention and rehabilitation programs. It's essential to identify and tackle the root causes of addiction, including lack of awareness and access to mental health services. By fostering an environment of support and education, we need to work towards eradicating this menace and create a safer and healthier community for everyone.
Q6. What are your views on the problems faced by the youth in the area?
The youth in Govandi Shivaji Nagar demand better education, jobs and skill centers at present. It is disheartening to witness employment discrimination based on their residential address, which limits their potential and aspirations. I firmly believe that our youth are incredibly talented and deserve the chance to thrive. Education and employment are fundamental rights, and I am fully committed to advocating for initiatives that will empower them. My mission is to work alongside local organizations and stakeholders to create opportunities that allow our young people to realize their full potential and contribute positively to our community.
