Every year, around 11 million people are expected to develop piles in India, and the number is increasing rapidly in urban areas. Due to a sedentary lifestyle, increased consumption of junk food, stress, constipation and poor eating habits, piles are forming rapidly. Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, are the swollen veins around the anal and rectum area that causes discomfort and pain, often associated with embarrassment. By the age of 50, 50% of people will develop piles at least once in their life, according to studies. And if left untreated, they can cause serious problems in bowel movements leading to blood clots, infections and poor lifestyle. That's why Dr. Mukesh Kota says, "There are a variety of surgical and non-surgical ways to treat piles. However, the best thing to do is consult with a specialist who can advise implementing effective precautionary steps."

Additionally, he explains that there are stages of piles where initial grades 1 and 2 can be medically treated. This phase can be treated effectively with a few lifestyle changes and by taking medications like over-the-counter creams, ointments, and suppositories. There are treatments where the ointment is directly applied to the affected area. Medications like this can help manage piles easily by reducing inflammation, itching, and pain. In some cases, using oral pain relievers can prove beneficial.

Grade 3 and 4 need specialised treatments and surgery to handle. Minimal invasive treatment and local anaesthesia are ideal options. These procedures come with minimal or no discomfort, with quick recovery and short procedure time. "However, if this phase is neglected, the person has to go with intense surgical procedures like staple surgery which is unavoidable," adds Dr. Mukesh Kota.

But, with simple lifestyle adjustments, piles can be avoided from their roots, which can help significantly. " Faulty food consumption and habit of sitting in the toilet for a longer time is severely impacting the people, with youngsters more exposed to it," adds Dr. Mukesh Kota. He emphasizes on impactful prevention tips like maintaining proper anal hygiene. Ensure to clean the area using warm water and pat with a soft cloth to dry. After each bowel movement, carefully clean the anal area with water and wipes. Avoid scented and harsh products that can irritate or lead to inflammation.

Another key to prevent piles is hydration. While hydration is the solution to avoid many health issues, it significantly impacts bowel movement. A hydrated body will find it easy to pass the stool as water softens the stool, reducing the strain on rectal veins. Dehydration is often linked to constipation, which is a reason for the development of piles. That's why drinking 6-8 glasses per day is suggested.

Dr. Mukesh Kota also adds, " It is highly recommended that people who face difficulty in passing stool add a high-fibre diet. Eating fibre-rich foods like legumes, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains helps soften stool. This is because such food helps absorb water, increases the volume of stool, and reduces pressure. Therefore, an intake of 14 grams per 1000 calories is recommended. Also, limit the intake of spicy food as it can irritate the digestive system, leading to burning, discomfort, and irritating the piles."

Consumption of alcohol and smoking are the biggest foe of piles. Smoking can constrict the blood vessels, which can aggravate haemorrhoids. On the other hand, overconsumption of alcohol can lead to dehydration, which in turn can harden the stool, causing haemorrhoids. Therefore, a limited consumption of both can protect gut health and help with preventing piles.

Moreover, exercising regularly may be a lot to commit to, but it is worth in order to pursue a healthier lifestyle. To avoid the ailment, Dr. Mukesh Kota suggests exercising regularly for 30-45 mins as it helps eliminate constipation and abdominal pain and helps with digestion. Practising asanas related to digestion and bowel movements like Dhanurasana, Pavanamuktasana and Vajrasana can decrease the chance of piles formation

To sum it up, it's easy to deal with piles by following some simple lifestyle changes that are better for the long run.
