Dr.Thomas Koshy
As we celebrated World Women's Day, on 8th March 2024, it's very essential to address an often-overlooked adversary in women's health: Diabetes Mellitus. Amidst the multitude of roles played by women daily, their own health is frequently ignored, allowing diabetes to progress silently. Our collective effort on this day is for early diagnosis, effective management, and transformative lifestyle changes in the fight against diabetes among the fairer gender.
Diabetes is a dangerous disease, silently affecting millions of people worldwide. Its impact on women is particularly severe, significantly increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and strokes, which are amongst leading cause of mortality among women globally, hence Diabetes is very aptly called "The Silent Killer". The battle gets even steeper for women with diabetes, who face specific challenges such as complications during pregnancy. There is a greater likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes during pregnancy, called Gestational Diabetes.
The cornerstone in turning the tide against this condition is early detection. However, the subtle nature of the symptoms of diabetes in women prevents early diagnosis. Hence the need for routine health check-ups, especially for those with a predisposition to diabetes through genetic inheritance or previous experiences with gestational diabetes.
The war against diabetes doesn't stop at early diagnosis or treatment. A wholesome approach, involving a complete change of lifestyle, by adopting a diet rich in nutrients, engaging in regular physical activity, and achieving an optimal body weight. Women, must find ways to integrate these health-centric practices into their daily routines inspite of the multiple roles they play daily.
This World Women's Day, let us enhance our efforts to promote diabetes awareness and appropriate lifestyle changes among women. Health care systems need to adopt, tailored solutions to address women's unique health needs.
Let us empower women to take control of their health, championing a future where informed decision-making and proactive engagement pave the way to overcoming diabetes. Let World Women's Day be a beacon, illuminating the path to not just annual recognition but a sustained commitment to women's health and well-being.
