Kumbhalgarh Fort, situated north of Udaipur in the wilderness, is the second most significant citadel in Mewar followed by Chittorgarh. Standing 1,900 metres above sea level, the fort is known as the Great Wall of Indian. Time to explore the fort's history while living like a Rajput in resorts in Kumbhalgarh.
According to local belief, the original Kumbhalgarh Fort was constructed by King Samprati and dates back to the Maurya Age of the 6th century. But owing to inadequate records, there's not much clarity about the fort from its origins till 1303 that marks its capture by Alauddin Khilji.
The fort you behold today was erected in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha of Mewar. Legends say that Rana Kumbha encountered so many hurdles to build the fort that he almost abandoned its construction. But a holy man told him that a good-hearted person who chooses to sacrifice his life for the fort will end all the difficulties. Since no one was willing to make this sacrifice, the hermit beheaded himself. Soon the fort could be erected without any obstacles. Its entrance marks the point where the hermit's head dropped. The King named it the Hanuman Pol.
The fort is, thus, a beautiful blend of the past with the present.
The Kumbhalgarh Fort is not only associated with legends but also with great historical significance. At times of threat, the Kings of Mewar used it as a safe refuge. It has even witnessed many important events that shaped the region's past. One such event is the Maharana Pratap's birth in the citadel. After Chittor's invasion, the fort offered refuge to the young Prince Udai of Mewar.
It gallantly remained invincible under attacks from different rulers except when Akbar's general, Man Singh seized it in 1576. Afterwards, colonial rulers occupied the fort before it eventually came under the protection of the Rajasthan Government.
