Hysteroscopic treatment is preferred for uterine fibroids as it relieves women from heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and related fertility issues.
Dr. Mohit Saraogi, a renowned infertility specialist states, âThe hysteroscopy procedure is one of the most convenient procedures to treat women with uterine fibroids. It assists us in diagnosing the condition and also in removing the fibroids without having to undergo an invasive procedure.
Uterine fibroids are also known as myomas or leiomyomas. As the name suggests, uterine fibroids are non-cancerous in the uterus. Moreover, they do not increase the risk of cancer. Symptoms associated with them are heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and issues in conceiving. It is also possible that women with uterine fibroids do not experience any symptoms and are accidentally discovered during gynecological check-ups and ultrasounds.

Traditional treatment for uterine fibroids included medication, invasive procedures, and non-invasive procedures. The hysteroscopic treatment is the outcome of advancements in minimally invasive surgical procedures, which enable the diagnosis and removal of fibroids.
Dr. Saraogi explains the hysteroscope and its use. The hysteroscope is a thin tube with a light that can be inserted into the vagina to examine the cervix and the uterus. Hence, this procedure is known as Hysteroscopy. This procedure can be a diagnostic or an operating procedure.
Suppose the treating gynecologist performs a hysteroscopy to view fibroids, polyps, adhesions, septums, and other issues in the cervix, uterine lining, fallopian tubes, and the uterus. In that case, it is a diagnostic hysteroscopy.
However, if the treating gynecologist removes the fibroids, blood or mucus as visible in the uterus using special instruments during the procedure, it is termed as an operative hysteroscopy. But, diagnostic hysteroscopy is completed in less time than an operative hysteroscopy.
The hysteroscopy procedure is performed under sedation. The procedure can take five to ten minutes or up to an hour or more, depending on the fibroids and other issues detected in the uterus. If required, the doctor can also perform a laparoscopy simultaneously.
Dr. Saraogi shares the story of his patient Ms R a 34-year-old woman who complained of heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and infertility. She underwent a successful hysteroscopic procedure to remove multiple uterine fibroids, as recommended and performed by Dr Mohit Saraogi.
The outcome of the hysteroscopy procedure resulted in her speedy recovery and minimal discomfort post-procedure, and she conceived naturally. Today, Ms R. is a proud mother of a healthy young baby. He states that hysteroscopic treatment has emerged as a reliable option for treating uterine fibroids and restoring fertility.
