Bleeding hearts shown for first time with new scan

By: Agencies

British scientists have for the first time captured incredible images that show bleeding inside the heart after a heart attack.

Researchers used a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technique to show the damage that heart attacks can cause.

The coloured area on this MRI scan shows a cross-section of the heart muscle, with the area of bleeding shown in red.

Scientists from the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre at Imperial College London hope the imaging will help them identify patients at risk of complications after attacks.

Heart and circulatory disease is the UK's biggest killer and someone dies from a heart attack every six minutes.
