A ceiling collapsed at Dave Hostel in Dongri yesterday night, killing one and injuring three others.

At around 10.30 pm, the deceased Sajid Yousuf (34) and 12 others, including hostel manager Mohammed Ashiq, were watching the India-Pakistan ODI in a room on the ground floor when the ceiling gave way. Yousuf had been employed as a roomboy at the hostel for three years.

"Suddenly we heard a sound from the ceiling and mud started falling on us. Everyone rushed out," said Ashiq, who sustained multiple fractures and was rushed to J J Hospital along with two other residents of hostel, Asif Qazi (27) and Prashant Singh (23).

Yousuf, who died on the spot, was watching the match intently. "Yousuf loved cricket and nothing could distract him during the game," said a hostel employee. Yousuf had been employed at the hostel for three years.

Said Dr Mohan Warang, casualty medical officer at J J Hospital, "Yousuf sustained a fracture to his skull and his body could be recognised only by the tattoo on his arm." The patients will be transferred to the orthopaedic department today.

Added Ashiq, "A part of the hostel building was renovated last year and it is still uncertain why the ceiling fell." There were around 35 people in the hostel at the time of incident.
