Local intelligence to check crime

Delhi: In the wake of terror strikes in Bangalore and Ahmedabad, the Delhi police are working hard to make use of "local intelligence" to check criminal activities.

The eyes and ears scheme, referred as local intelligence by the cops, was launched by Delhi Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal sometime back to involve common men and vendors to provide necessary input on suspicious activities and persons.

"With cities growing manifolds, it's essential to make people a part of policing to ensure law and order in the city," said a senior Delhi police official.

Roadside intelligence

The scheme aims involving local people especially roadside vendors, security guards, parking attendants, drivers, porters, people sitting on side-walks/pavements, roads, railway platforms and others to inform police about any suspicious object/person or activity in their knowledge.

Individuals like porters at railway and bus stations, workers at tea and refreshment stalls, newspapers and magazines sellers and other road-side vendors are active at most of the public places which can be targeted by anti-social elements.

One lakh eyes and ears

With the help of its new initiative, police claims to have solved nearly hundred cases of robbery, murder and abduction in the capital.

Other than its own staff, police has more than one lakh citizens as part of the scheme to provide timely inputs to check criminal activities in the city.
