NDMC officer gets 2-yr RI

Mumbai: A suspended NDMC employee was sentenced to two years' rigorous imprisonment by a Delhi court for demanding Rs-7,000 bribe from a construction company's official for clearing his pending bill.

Additional Sessions Judge A S Yadav also imposed a fine of Rs 8,000 on convict Subhash Chand, 43, after holding him guilty under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Chand, working as junior engineer of New Delhi Municipal Council, was apprehended by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi police on December 28, 1999, when he was taking money from Ashok Kapoor, director of ACON Construction India Pvt Ltd.

Kapoor's firm was undertaking renovation work of Mayur Bhawan for Rs 2.39 crore which was to be completed within nine months.

The director of construction company contacted the engineer for clearing his a pending bill of Rs 1.75 lakh but he demanded the bribe.
