The Delhi government has cleared a proposal for construction of an elevated road connecting the Commonwealth Games village near Akshardham temple to Jawaharlal Stadium games venue for the movement of players during the Commonwealth Games 2010.
The proposal was cleared today at the Expenditure Finance Committee of the Delhi government yesterday in a meeting chaired by Delhi Finance Minister A K Walia. "The elevated road over Barapullah Nallah starting from Sarai-Kale Khan to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium would be constructed to facilitate movement of 10,000 players during Commonwealth Games village 2010", said Walia.
The road will be constructed within 24 months after award of work and would be beneficial not only for the games but also become a permanent link between East and Central Delhi ensuring free flow of traffic.
The government had to look for an elevated road option after its plans to construct an underground tunnel connecting games venue and the commonwealth village was opposed by environmentalists and conservationists.
