Mumbai: One month on, actress yet to learn who killed her brother

Over a month after her brother’s death in a road rage incident, Bollywood actress Poonam Jhawer (38) is still in search of answers about his death. Despite daily visits to the police station, Poonam — whose claim to fame are films such as Mohra (1994) and OMG: Oh My God! (2012) is yet to learn the identity of her brother’s alleged killer.

Case history
On May 31, Poonam’s brother, Kamal Bhuvan (52) was mysteriously found unconscious in his car in Andheri (East). He was rushed to the hospital, but passed away the same night. Unable to determine the cause of death, initially the Andheri police had registered a case of accidental death.

Later, however, Poonam got hold of CCTV footage from the area, which revealed that Kamal had been involved in a road rage episode at the very spot he was later found. The tapes showed Kamal driving by Rameshwar temple when his car grazed a scooter. According to cops, Kamal was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The enraged biker asked Kamal to get out of the car, after which the two had a heated argument that led to fisticuffs. In the scuffle, Kamal fell and had trouble getting back up. In the video, the biker is seen pushing him back into the car and then fleeing the spot. Following this discovery, the police registered a case of murder on June 17 and, since then, have been on the lookout for the culprit.

No luck
“I come to the police station every day to enquire about my brother’s killer. The police are doing their investigation. I had given the CCTV footage to them as well, but it is not clear who was the man who had fought with my brother,” Jhawer told mid-day.

More than a month past the incident, Poonam is unsure when the case will be solved. “There are no clues in the case. It is clearly seen that the man had pushed my brother and fought with him. However, no identification has been done yet,” she added.

Meanwhile, the police are clueless about the identity of the biker. According to the police, a major roadblock has been the blurry CCTV footage, which does not reveal the accused’s face clearly. Despite this, teams have been formed to hunt him down, and a sketch of the biker has also been prepared.

Cop speak
ACP (Andheri division) Dilip Rupawate told this paper, “I have gone through the case file and the CCTV footage. We are in the middle of investigations and are trying to look for the accused.” Another police official disclosed that preliminary reports showed that Kamal had several scrapes on his head and body, although the detailed post-mortem report is not ready yet.
