'I'll go to Kerala again'
By: Noel de Souza

New york:

SHE'S back on the big screen once again opposite David Duchovny in the new X-Files: I Want To Believe movie. Gillian Anderson who plays Scully convinces the Duchovny character to come out of retirement and solve the case of a missing girl. Gillian who now makes her home in England has flown to the States to meet with the press and to talk about the movie. At my allotted time I meet with her at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills and I'm surprised to see that she is pregnant,

When is the big day?
October, middle of October.

Congratulations.
Thanks.

You look great. What are you wearing?
The dress is by Rachel Palley (a moss green empire waist maternity dress) and these purple pump heels are by Christian Louboutin.

What made David and you wait so long before doing this movie?
Both David and I had agreed that we were going to come together and do the film whenever the producers and director (Chris Carter) could get it together. We both had faith that a script that would make sense, in terms of our characters being apart for so long and in the over all concept of X-Files, would be delivered to us when it was ready. If you see the film you will see that it is a very strong relationship piece. The film is a marriage of the character and the thriller aspect. I read the script and I think it works, David agreed and so we did it.

The title of the film is I want To Believe, I would like to know what does Gillian Anderson believe in, does she believe in God, does she believe in the super-natural or is she a scientific and rational person.
I don't know. I have a lot of different beliefs; they are more of a spiritual nature than of a religious nature. I am very open minded to accepting different things. So I would say I'm a mixture of it all.

Does Piper (her daughter) want to follow in her mother's footsteps and become an actress?
Hopefully not. Every once in a while she threatens me with it but I think hopefully that she'll go into other areas of the creative world.

You could have made a career for yourself here in Hollywood, so why the move to London?
I've made a couple of challenging choices in my life. I choose to move to London to get away from the madness of the entertainment industry, but mostly for the love of the city and the love of the culture of living in Europe and an opportunity to bring my children up in a saner environment.

And the second reason?
I choose not to be as ambitious as I might have been, you know, kind of jump on the bandwagon of the success of the series. What I get to do these days is get to walk outside my front door and not be followed, I get to go to restaurants and have a meal with my family and not worry that there is going to be a camera around the corner. I don't have to worry to wear particular clothes before I leave the house, or being chased by photographers when I'm driving and increasing the risk of an accident.

Don't you want to work more often?
Certainly there's apart of me that would love to have the opportunity to work with extraordinary directors, I do have that desire, but I'm curious at what cost would that be. I think I've never been a very hugely ambitious person. I'm incredibly happy in my personal life right now and I've had an extraordinary opportunity to do different things, I still do theater which I Iove. But I'm always going to make the choice to live a quieter life away from the madness that this business could bring.

What would it take for you to consider moving back to the states?
You know, I have to say that that if Obama gets into office, it would be the first time that I'd consider moving back.

Do you travel around Europe much?
Yes. Where are you from?

India.
I've been a couple of times to your country, mostly in the south from Mumbai down, specifically in Kerala; I've gone along the backwaters a lot. I've gone from Cochin to Pondicherry and down to Trivandrum and all around there. It's so beautiful. I love it.

I know that you are involved in a lot of charities, so did you go there in conjunction with one of your charities?
The second time I went? No it wasn't, there was an orphanage in Sri Lanka that I was going to visit until I heard that there was an outbreak of measles there and I wasn't going to take any chances as I was about to start this X-Files movie, also I was trying to get pregnant again. So I decided to go to Kerala again, I have some charities in mind that I would love to be involved in but my trips to India have been for holidays, Christmas vacation and just exploring that beautiful land that you've got there.
