In a shocking incident, a young woman in Uttar Pradesh strangled an 80-year-old female beggar in her home, set the body on fire and ran away, leaving a suicide note to create the impression that she had committed suicide, police said. The fugitive woman was later arrested.

According to the police, Femida (28) carried out the gruesome crime to get separated from her husband following some marital discord.

Her husband was away in Delhi when the incident happened.

Femida (28), a Ramgarh resident, Friday asked the old woman beggar from her neighbourhood to come to her house and have food. She strangled the beggar, dressed the body with her clothes and set it on fire, police inspector Ummid Khan told reporters in Firozabad, some 300 km from Lucknow.

Initially the neighbours, and even the police, believed that it was Femida who had committed suicide, he said.

However, Femida landed in police hands Saturday when she returned to her house to collect the old woman's clothes that she had forgotten to remove from the place, the official said.

"We spotted a woman in burqa entering the home and followed her. It was Femida," said Khan.
