Angelina Jolie's recent interview in a magazine revealed some details about a casting game that has outraged people.

Jolie is currently set to release her new directorial project with Netflix titled First They Killed My Father, an adaptation of a personal account by human rights activist, Long Ung, of her experiences as a child in Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge years.

The article states that Jolie "looked at orphanages, circuses, and slum schools, seeking children, who had experienced hardship" to play Ung, but that the casting directors devised a cruel game to pick the child actor.

They kept money on a table, asking the child to think of a reason she could use the money for, and then to snatch it away. "Srey Moch [the girl chosen for the part] was the only child who stared at the money for a long time. When she was forced to give it back, she was overwhelmed with emotion. She later revealed that her grandfather had died, and they didn't have enough money for a nice funeral."

The description has come under grave criticism for the way the makers exploited a child's trauma to get some realistic acting. Though Jolie wasn't present at the coup, she didn't condemn the approach either.
